Comic Struggle
Acrylic on Canvas | 48″ x 36″

Here I am being torn apart by two sets of graphic novel characters of my own design. The intense tableau is met with strong colours and a jolting, near-symmetrical composition.

Granville’s Magic Hour
Acrylic on Canvas | 30″ x 24″

This extravagantly lush and nonsensical painting was selected for the January 2009 spread of the Reflections Vancouver 2008 calendar. My artist statement read, “Van Gogh’s Cafe Terrance at Night made an excellent reference to base my wintry Granville vision on.”

Charming Ebert
Oil on Canvas | 40″ x 30″

Film critic Roger Ebert is one of my heroes. I wanted to highlight him in a cinematic scene involving a femme fetale. The vivid colours saturate this world of film stock.

Panhandler Revolt
Hand-Drawn with Digital Colouring | Each Panel: 6” x 3”

The storyboard sequence presents a dramatically paced, satirical short movie. The cinematic lighting and exaggerated compositions translate the kinetic action and semi-dark comedy of the story.

“GermATTAXX!” Book Cover
Ink and Digital Colouring 7″ x 10″

My first illustrated book was a marriage between monotonal type and energetic character design. The saturated colours and simple, streamlined style make a forceful impact.

Grinning
Acrylic on Canvas | 24″ x 15″

Exuberant brush strokes with a thick and brilliant colour palette were used to make my caricature portrait larger than life. The style was loosely inspired by Sebastian Kruger and Alberto Giacometti.

Colbert the Beautiful
Watercolour and Pencil Crayons | 7″ x 9″

“Which brings us to Tonight’s Word:
RAINBEAU!!!!!!
Rainbeau!!?
You’ve got two languages in the same word, Beaubien!
French or English!
Pick a side – we’re at war!
And that’s The Word!”

“MTV Select” Mural
Acrylic, Pencil Crayon and Colour Felt on Illustration Board 50″ x 30″

This mural showcases the hosts of the TV show MTV Select.
From left to right: Terri Hall, Brian Adler, Amanda MacKay.

“Vampish Romance” Poster
Gouache and Pencil Crayon on Illustration Board | 9″ x 12″

This Halloween-themed poster inspired these playfully wicked character designs. A bizarre yet cheerful vibe was the visceral goal that I used to communicate to the potential audience.

Ramona Quimby
Hand-Drawn with Ink | 8.25″ x 9″

A comic illustration featuring the title character of Beverly Cleary’s books, Ramona Quimby at age ten, one of my few childhood heroes. This was drawn in the style of illustrator Alan Tiegreen.
